Logistics giant opens base at Sabiha Gökçen

In another step to make Turkey an important base for logistics, TNT Ekspres is launching an operations center at Sabiha Gökçen International Airport.

ISTANBUL (A.A) - Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull Racing teamtopped the third and final free practice in Formula 1 Turkey Grand Prix at ParkCircuit in Istanbul on Saturday.German pilot became the fastest with 1.27.086, and was followed by NicoRosberg of Mercedes GP with 1.27.359, and Lewis Hamilton of McLaren Mercedes with1.27.396.The race will begin at the Istanbul Park Circuit at 3 p.m. local time on May30.(GC)

VAN (A.A) - Security forces seized 27 kg of heroin in anoperation in eastern Turkey, officials said on Saturday.Gendarmerie received a tip that a drug cartel would transport heroin fromthe eastern province of Van to western countries. Gendarmerie followed a car andstopped it near Gurpinar town. They found the heroin stashed in 51 packs inhidden compartments of the car.Driver of the car was arrested, officials said.In another operation, gendarmerie teams in the southern province of Hatayseized 19.5 kg of hashish during a drug bust at a house. The owner of the housewas arrested too.(TÇ-GC)

ANKARA (A.A) - A Turkish sergeant and a village guard werekilled in clash with terrorists in southeast Turkey, Turkish military said onSaturday.In a statement posted on its website, Turkish military said three soldierswere also wounded in the clash with terrorists in a remote area in Sirnakprovince early on Saturday.Wounded soldiers were taken to military hospital, the statement said.In another clash with terrorists in Hakkari province, three other soldierswere wounded on Friday, the statement added.(TÇ-GC)

CAIRO (A.A) - Turkish Chief of General Staff General IlkerBasbug, who is on a formal visit to Egypt, met with Egyptian President HosniMubarak on Saturday.It was a closed-door meeting at the presidential palace in Cairo.Following his meeting with Mubarak, Basbug was welcomed by Egypt's DefenseMinister Hussein Tantawi with an honors ceremony. Their meeting was also closedto press.Later in the day, Basbug will visit the Unknown Soldier Memorial, tomb offormer Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and the Turkish cemetery in Cairo.(TÇ-GC)

ANKARA (A.A) - President Mevlut Cavusoglu of ParliamentaryAssembly of Council of Europe (PACE) said on Saturday that"the differences wehave are one of the basic sources that unite us."Speaking at a session in the third forum of Alliance of Civilizations inBrazil, Cavusoglu said that PACE was the largest roof of Europe where membersfrom different culture, language and religion could represent themselves.He noted that PACE, which represented over 800 million people from 47countries, was the biggest negotiation platform in European continent. He addedthat PACE was not just a formation that brought parliamentarians of differentpolitical views together.Cavusoglu said that universal principles like democracy, supremacy of lawand human rights were basic keys to overcome problems which stemmed fromcultural, religious and political differences.(GC)

British and Spanish authorities tried to save a bulk carrier which hit rocks on Gibraltar's southern tip Friday as storms hammered the British colony, local officials said.

The Liberian-registered Fedra was dragging her anchor in a force 8 gale Friday afternoon. Despite the efforts of two tug boats to hold the ship clear of land, its anchor broke and the stern of the 35,000 tonne vessel smashed against rocks at Europa Point -- Europe's most southerly spot.

Local officials said they did not immediately know the condition of the ship or what it was carrying.

A Gibraltarian rescue helicopter hovered overhead, trying to rescue the 31 crew, as winds of around 70 miles an hour battered the British territory and the southern Spanish coast.
