Salvage of Gunay-2 Unsuccessfull Today...
Wednesday, 01.21.2009, 05:35pm (GMT)

The attempts of disengagement and towing of the Turkish cargo liner, Gunay 2, failed off Marseilles with on its board 3000 tons of corn, were always in progress Wednesday afternoon, according to the police port authority united by LCI.fr. Two tug boats, Carangue, chartered by the National marine, and Provence, chartered by the Boluda civil society, like two high-speed motorboats of the sailor-firemen of Marseilles and the SNSM, were mobilized. But this rescue is made difficult by the weather conditions, the zone being in prey with a strong swell.

The ship, length 84 meters, with 10 people on board, ran aground in the night of Tuesday Wednesday on the southern point of the small island of Planier, located at 4 miles nautical (approximately 8 kilometers) of the coasts. It is surrounded by reefs which level and which already caused shipwrecks. At the time of the accident, the headlight of the island was in perfect operating condition. As for the cereal one, which had installed Fos-sur-Mer for Leghorn, in Italy, it completely had the right to take this road. Indeed, the channel is obligatory only for the boats transporting of the dangerous matters according to the police port authority.

No noted pollution

Until now, no pollution and no discharge of the cargo were noted. Six sailors were hélitreuillés by a helicopter of the National marine. The captain and three other members of the crew remained on board to help with the operations of disengagement of the boat. A team of evaluation for its part joined the ship, composed of a doctor of the battalion of the sailor-firemen of Marseilles, of a representative of the center of safety of the ships, of the commander of the tug boats of Marseilles and two pilots.

The attempts of disengagement and the towing of the boat will cease as of the fallen night but all the team will remain on the spot to monitor the ship and will take again Thursday morning at dawn, according to the police port authority.

British and Spanish authorities tried to save a bulk carrier which hit rocks on Gibraltar's southern tip Friday as storms hammered the British colony, local officials said.

The Liberian-registered Fedra was dragging her anchor in a force 8 gale Friday afternoon. Despite the efforts of two tug boats to hold the ship clear of land, its anchor broke and the stern of the 35,000 tonne vessel smashed against rocks at Europa Point -- Europe's most southerly spot.

Local officials said they did not immediately know the condition of the ship or what it was carrying.

A Gibraltarian rescue helicopter hovered overhead, trying to rescue the 31 crew, as winds of around 70 miles an hour battered the British territory and the southern Spanish coast.
